Adventure Playground

Center Parcs Whinfell Forest, Cumbria CA10 2DW, UK – 01768 893000

Fabulous! Lots to play on and great sand activities.

Good variety of things for small and big kids. My son loved it from 2 onwards, just had to explain that some toys are for the bigger boys and girls.

73 Lakeside Lodge

Penrith CA10 2DW, UK – 0344 826 7723

This was our first visit to Center Parcs. We stayed in Three Oaks No 7. Lodge was very spaceful and clean. It was a bit of a trek for my mum getting around but that said it is a active holiday. Next time we will book lakeside as easier to get about from there. The complex is excellent. Has tastes for everyone. Restaurants at are quite expensive and so are activities. Average meal 1 course is around £13. Children's average £7. The pool area is fantastic and free. Bring your own bikes if possible as a family of 4 will cost over £60 a day. All in all we had a fab time and will return.

Had an amazing holiday here. Lodge was modern and beautiful, surroundings perfect and the swimming complex was fab. Couple that with loads of activities available and we had the perfect family break.

Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

The Strickland Arms

Great Strickland, Nr Pooley Bridge, Penrith CA10 3DF, UK – 01931 712238

We went to The Strickland Arms for a meal and I have to say the food was lovely, and what a selection, something for everyone. Only one real ale on the night we went but usually there are more. An impressive selection of single malt whisky's. The decor was homely with book shelves and pictures all around. The owners and staff were and attentive. Can't fault it and hope to return on day.

This has became a regular place for our cycling group to visit and stay overnight, ideal for the C2C or just for riding in the superb and beautiful local area. Anton, Penny & staff are the perfect hosts and will look after your every need. Penny's pies are stuffed full of delicious fillings and Anton looks after his real ales so you're guaranteed a good drink and meal. Accommodation in the log yurts is perfect for groups. Cycling fans in particular will love it here as there is plenty of memorabilia of Team Sky's visit during the 2012 Tour of Britain, where they were fuelled for the next day's stage by the pub's excellent cooking! Brad Wiggins' TdF yellow jersey - signed by the man himself and presented to Anton - hangs proudly in the corner of "Brad's Bar". 5*

Lowther Castle Inn

Lowther Castle Inn, Penrith, Hackthorpe, Penrith CA10 2HX, UK – 01931 712339

Menu is a bit dated but quality and quantity of the food is good. Restaurant is very surprising with it's high ceilings panelled walls and old oil paintings around the room. Staff were very helpful and friendly .

A proper old fashioned inn. More 19th than 21st century but in a good way.

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

Bed & Breakfast Accommodation plus Guesthouses

Morland House

Morland, Penrith CA10 3AZ, UK – 01931 714244

A stunning country house steeped in history. The gardens and woodland walk by the river is picturesque. Well worth a visit and considering for a unique holiday.

This is not a review of the guest house, but of the four acres of Victorian gardens set around Morland Beck. They are magnificent. Bridges, waterfalls, stepping stones. Paths to explore. Open 10:00 am till 5:00 p.m (unless something else is going on) .

Campsites and Caravan Parks

Highgate Holiday Park

Highgate Farm, Morland Penrith CA10 3BB, UK – 01931 714347

Quiet with lovely views. I highly recommend a walk from here to The White Horse Inn in Kings Mead. The walk itself is really enjoyable and the pub is a great reward at the end. Friendly and serving great food.

A quiet and a well kept tidy place far away form the madding crowd. With views of the pennines and a place where you can visit Penrith or the lakes .Plenty of walks in the area. The site has WI-FI,Wired for sky box's and free view ..so no need for dishes or aerials and also has gas so no need for them ugly cylinders. Concrete foundations is provided and caravans are chained in to it making a solid site not like others I've seen.It has no clubhouse which makes for a peaceful place to relax.

A very warm welcome from the owners who are very helpful and friendly. Site is clean and secluded but offers views too also close to Penrith and the A66 and M6 too I would return again.

Nice, simple, good value campsite, very conveniently located for the M6, with friendly helpful owners. Not masses in the way of facilities, but ideal for a quick stopover en-route. Takes tents, caravans and motorhomes.
