The George Hotel

Devonshire Street, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 7SU – 01768 862696

it's all just a bit tired. as a regular visitor to the lakes, i go here on a regular basis to visit older relatives and they like it as it's 'comfortable'. the food is okay, i prefer sitting in the dapper lounge as it's a bit more modern and a lot cosier. the front of the hotel is usually nicely decked out at christmas but that's about it. service has never been great and prices seem highish for a town like penrith!

I got a deal from the internet, half price with a 3 course evening meal. Great value and lots of atmosphere. The room was small but comfortable.( wouldn't want to spend more than a couple of nights in it). The meal was great, as was breakfast. The staff welcoming and friendly. Penrith is a nice little market town, worth checking out when staying at the George, ideal location for visiting the Lakes. All in all I liked it.

Center Parcs Whinfell Forest

Penrith, Cumbria CA10 2DW – 0844 826 6266

Been there over 15 times and really enjoy it. In the early days it was a good value holiday with free access to the pool area and walks around the site. As the children grew up the costs of holidaying also grew as they wanted to partake in the various activities available. Our last visit saw us spend as much on activities as the 4 night accommodation! 3 teenage lads and a couple of activities each is nudging towards £200 Add in some beauty treatment for my wife and daughter and you're looking and total of over £350 The Quality of the food when eating out is great but 1 pint of beer and 1 cider is just short of £10 so dinning out for 6 with just 1 drink each can mount up. Eating in is the order of the day - take plenty of food with you and you'll be ok. Having said that, home cooking is a bit hit and miss with the oven we had last week. If you are happy to do you own meals you can keep the costs down, eat out every night and you may need a bigger credit card. I was happy to see some reinvestment as they are currently renovating a couple of cul-de-sac's so someone in the near future will experience that "new carpet and paint smell". The pool area is looking tired. The tiles above the water line look like they have not seen a sponge and soapy water for a long time, likewise the tiles at the edge of some walkways. I've tried to write an honest review but feel that my comments are quite negative HOWEVER.... I would definitely go again. What more can I say? I've got the Centerparcs bug!

Went here on a weekend away with the lads. Absolutely bombing time, we did so many different activities and the lack of the outside world is a great change in pace, especially if you're trying to get away and hide.

The Lounge Hotel and Bar

Mitre House, King Street, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 7AJ – 01768 866395

stayed here for a hen night and it was ideal. there was 6 of us and the rooms were perfectly adequate. the kitchen/lounge was big enough (for the amount of time we spent init), it was clean and equipped with basic mod cons. i think it worked out about 30-40 quid a head so good value. we also had a buffet style dinner with the rest of the 'hens' and enjoyed a great selection (chicken, nachos, noodles amongst others) all served hot and fresh. the bar has good music, seemed busy and the staff were attentive and friendly.

Nice fun place with great food

The Lowther Arms

Great food and a lovely setting.

Queen's Head Inn

Lower Green, Askham CA10 2PF – 01931 712225

We had the Lowther Suite at the Queen's Head, Askham, with children in a separate bedroom within the suite with bunk beds. The bathroom was large, well-equipped and new though the overall impression is of a traditional pub with rooms. All our beds were comfortable and the breakfasts were very good with real ground coffee. Vegetarians were also well catered for. We did not have an evening meal at the pub because we were trying out different places in nearby Penrith, but the beer is good and the local people in the pub were friendly. Askham is a normal working village community, not overrun by tourists, and the pub reflects that while welcoming us and the other visitors staying there. It is neverthelsss a good base for the Lakes with easy access to the Cumbrian coast and borders. Ullswater is only a few miles away with cruises from Pooley Bridge, and it did not take us long to reach Grasmere and Windermere to the south. The only criticism is that our room was not serviced in the day, crockery for tea and coffee in the room was not washed up, and the milk was not replenished. The carpets in the main hall downstairs is very worn, maybe a sign of a busy pub which sets more store by its hospitality, but those upstairs are in good condition. We all enjoyed our stay and regarded it as fair value for money.

Nice atmosphere and a decent pint :)

Yanwath Gate Inn

Yanwath, Penrith, Cumbria CA10 2LF – 01768 862386

Excellent Food, Great Ambience, Outstanding Ale, Best eaterie in Area. The Owner Matt is the most fantastic host. A must visit pub if you are in the area

Overpriced, I would not bother returning to this pub unless I wished to impress some Londoners! The Cumberland sausage was virtually tasteless. There is a good selection of beers.

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

Crosby Bed & Breakfast

93 Lowther Street, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 7UW – 01768 890339

Stayed here with Dawn (Owner) Friday - Sunday 27th-29th Oct2013. The location to the town centre is ideal...although up a slight hill its not too taxing. The Royal pub is not too far away showing good sports, satellite etc. also a good menu at the pub. A small B+B but homely. Beautifully restored to its present beauty. The visitors book is full of great comments...so to be different...I decided to post on here. Thanks for a good weekend stay dawn and hubby...good English breakfast as well. I will return. x Parking in the vicinity is good... a disc and permit system exists but dawn has all the appropriate documentation.

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
